Well, for those planning events, such as wedding parties or corporate-style events, there are always numerous items to handle that help to make those events a success. This juggling act includes managing everything from the location vendor to the catering and then entertainment aspects.

This is all on top of keeping track of an ever-growing and ever-changing guest list. One that needs to have a proper handling as guests may have their own needs, requests, or desires.

You can have a load of chaos to face in this setup. So getting professionals on board is always good, and the earlier, the better. It will give vendors adequate time to refine their schedule. Also, the more information you can provide about the event's size and theme, the better your vendors will be able to perform and deliver in the end.

One of those critical areas is selecting the forms of entertainment to have. You don't want an event without anything to perk people up, leading to a stuffy atmosphere and a deafening silence. However, at the same time, you want to have the right type of musical entertainment that isn't overwhelming.

So it all comes down to striking the right balance. A great solution for this is to consider a Los Angeles Acoustic Guitarist for Hire that helps to cover all your southern California needs.

Why should you consider a Los Angeles guitarist for hire?

Having an acoustic guitarist overall brings a sense of inclusivity. It doesn't really focus on any specific culture. In fact, it can be seen to transcend cultural boundaries and be appreciated by the most diverse audience out there. With this inclusive atmosphere, you can bring together a diverse or even international audience from the off with no one feeling alien or left out. The acoustic guitar has a universal appeal for many. This means it can also help when handling different musical tastes and requests.

This is a pretty big deal as it helps event planners to focus on other aspects. Hiring an acoustic guitar will help to placate the diversity of any type of event that they are planning so another load off your mind.

Versatility and Variety

There are many benefits when you hire a professional acoustic guitarist. Flexibility and being able to mix it up is one of the main ones. From my experience as someone who's been in the business for quite some time I'd say it's crucial to have this. Being able to set a pleasant ambiance while at the same time being able to cover a wide range of music genres helps give your next event a variety you previously didn't think was possible.

The genres can range from current popular songs to background jazz or folk-style music. This variety helps to handle the attendees' range in tastes effectively. The more planning and notice given ahead of time means the more options being possible.

Classic Elegance

When it's needed, an acoustic guitar helps to bring a certain type of theme. There's that feeling of sophistication that can come from adding this instrument to your event that you can't match. You could have a corporate conference or a simple networking reception, either way it doesn't matter. As the right kind of skilled acoustic guitar player will help bring in that aura of class and elevate the impression of the event and the mood.

It even helps with non-work-related events such as weddings. You have that intimate tone and feel at one point of a wedding but you can swiftly kick up the energy during the reception itself.

Works as background music as needed

Due to the range of the acoustic guitar, it can be the perfect setting when it comes to a corporate event. It's meant to set a pleasant mood without having to be too loud at all. This means attendees can have entertainment without becoming distracted. Or worse, having music that's so overpowering that it ends up restricting communication between the attendees of the event. It's a conversation-friendly approach, and as long as you prep the performer ahead of time, they can easily adjust the volume.

Engagement at its best

On the flip side, there's also a huge possibility for interactivity with the right type of skilled acoustic guitarist. That's because they'll be able to interact with the crowd, whether it's a wedding, anniversary, or good old-fashioned party. They can take requests directly from the crowd and play favorites for the group easily.

At the same time, they can even invite some of the gathering to come in and join the guitarist. Helping sing along, or playing some simple instruments, adding enjoyment for all. Beyond entertainment, it also helps to bring about a feeling of connection as well.

Smooth transition

This is especially true when it comes to corporate-based events, but working with an acoustic guitarist helps for a seamless transition and break between sessions. As keynote speakers come on and off the stage, having a professional acoustic musician play in between the breaks helps to bring a unique aspect to the overall networking or company conference. It can help to reduce any tension buildup as it's a workplace function. Creating an overall welcoming professional environment. It signifies a time to unwind as well as signaling to people the next event is about to begin when the music takes a pause.

A Los Angeles guitarist for hire means an easy setup and is also cost-effective

When considering working with a Los Angeles Musician for Hire it can lead you to think that it's going to be an expensive endeavor. But it all depends on what you're looking to get. With an Acoustic Guitarist you'll receive much more value for your overall budget and that doesn't mean there's going to be a lack of entertainment or quality.

To start off you're going to need less space designated for an acoustic guitarist. You're looking at a solo performance from a master of the guitar and singing performance perspective. That means you can repurpose additional space to maximize the venue. Those are magic words to event planners, as that extra space means either more attendees or other critical options.

There's also less of a need for technical requirements and sound setups. Larger bands and ensembles will always need a complex technical structure to ensure everything is connected correctly. Also with a dress rehearsal and sound checks that may be possible. You're looking at minimal to no technical requirements with an acoustic guitar professional, depending on the overall space. At the most, we commonly see a microphone as the general technical setup, which isn't a complex affair.

This leads to overall cost-effectiveness as there will generally be fewer resources required. Since you're also only working with a solo artist, you're typically going to get the best value and lowest cost than when looking for bands or other types of entertainment. As mentioned earlier, cost-effectiveness does not mean a reduction in performance with an acoustic guitarist versus other options. In fact, it may even be a much higher quality option than the alternatives.

What to consider before contacting a Los Angeles guitarist for hire

Do keep in mind that if you're looking for a Los Angeles Acoustic Guitarist for Hire or one in the surrounding area, you want to book in advance. The sooner you're able to book with someone such as myself, the sooner the proper planning and preparation can happen. All the key items can be discussed, such as what type of ambiance or theme the event is going to be. It tends to be wildly different when preparing for a corporate event versus preparing for an intimate wedding for example. The more prep time that is given, the better the overall performance will end up being.

Ultimately, you'll get what is probably the best feature of an acoustic guitarist. That is a memorable and enjoyable overall experience. Live music gives a stronger lasting impression to guests than when simply going for a DJ or other forms of entertainment. Whether it’s due to its inclusivity, variety, or the fact that anyone can enjoy it, this performance is going to evoke emotions in the audience, regardless of the type of event. That means guests will leave with an additional positive impression that goes beyond the kind of event it was in the first place.

It's perfect in a professional event setting as it will have guests left with a glowing reflection of the organization. At the same time if you're looking to get an acoustic guitar for a private party or event it has the guests leaving with joy in their minds.

Here are some tips to get you started with the perfect professional relationship with a Los Angeles guitarist for hire

If you're already decided on the prospect of getting a professional acoustic guitarist, then here are some tips that can help you have the best experience and also have your expectations managed at the same time.

Know what you’re looking for and define them

Basically, you want to define your requirements and what you want your Acoustic Guitarist to be. Are you simply looking for a professional who provides some folksy tunes and background music at a large corporate event? Or are you looking for someone to be the focal point and life of the party for an anniversary or some other ceremony? Make sure to always clarify this ahead of time.

Work with the best Los Angeles Guitarist for hire

Always make sure to seek an acoustic guitarist who not only has plenty of accolades or recommendations but also has the sound you're looking for. Make sure to review samples of their work, as any professional will have readily available samples to study and play. Also, make sure that you can see videos of them in action. This is so that you know exactly what type of vibe they offer and if it matches what you're looking for.

Look for a partner, not just a performer

Another area to weigh up is you want your acoustic guitarist to help you with a certain portion of the event. After all they are there to set the tone and ambiance. So make sure you give them key information ranging from not just the type of the event but the size of the event and the location itself. Knowing ahead of time what the place will be like as well as the target audience goes a long way in preparation. Make sure the performance space is comfortable and there's a space for a break from time to time as well.

Ensure you offer plenty of dress rehearsal time

Make sure you're able to give access to your performer ahead of time. This means they can check out the area and make any necessary adjustments to their offering if need be. Professionals know that their performance can sound vastly different between different venues, so they want to know what changes they would need to make. This can also be referred to as the sound check.

Work with me today

I've worked on numerous different types of events in the Southern California region, from corporate events to those special days. I can easily be your Los Angeles acoustic guitarist for hire in the city or anywhere within the Southern California radius. It's a bright pink food truck that has an all female staff and some incredible hamburgers. The brilliant woman behind it all is Erica Cohen.

She started her journey with food as a little girl living in New York and now is one of the two founders of the incredibly successful business that has tons of rave reviews from everyday Los Angelites to celebs like Gwyneth Paltrow, Kylie Jenner, Jimmy Fallon and tons more...

Many years ago, along with her dad, also a food connoisseur, they embarked on a quest to find the perfect hamburger. Sampling the amazing flavors of the NYC burgers they pieced together the inspiration for what would later be the beginning of her uber successful business.

She found me online and booked me to play her birthday party. Not only did she have a beautiful property up on the hills, her family was so kind and welcoming. Her kids even helped me unload my gear! After I was set up I played a laid back set of some Bob Marley, John Mayer, Black Keys and Ben Harper and some acoustic easy listening pop. During my breaks I switched over to a custom playlist curated just for her and thankfully we have very similar tastes in music so it was easy to add a few extras - Fleetwood Mac, Jack Johnson, Train, Foo Fighters.....

I made a few new friends over the break, including her husband who was an LA firefighter for many years. He was one of the brave men leading the charge to fight against one of the biggest fire's in the history of Southern California.

During one of my breaks I was able to walk over and order "The Good Wife" - a breakfast burger that was so massive you almost need to dislocate your jaw to take a bite. All I can say is - you just have to try it. It truly is leagues above any other burger you're likely to try. Perfectly grilled, flavorful, juicy - very much comparable to the artful balance of a well written song. After eating it, I felt fat and sassy, the way you should after eating a nice burger or some soups and breads and desserts.

It was such a good time and it's always a blessing to get to actually meet the people at my performances and hear the stories and lives and hear them talk with their friends about good times.
Here’s a list of the most common events and their recommended performance choices.

Corporate Event

Cover Band, Dance Band/Party Band, Hypnotist, Comedian, Comedy Magician, Inspirational Speaker, Edu-Tainer (Keynote Speaker + Musician)

Usually more mature audiences full of professionals, high level performers with engaging performances are usually a big hit. There is usually a theme to these events and it’s wise to get a performer who matches that theme. For example, if the theme is technology and society, it would be a good idea to find an entertainer who uses the most modern technology in their performance. If the theme is “the power of storytelling” a songwriter who tells intriguing stories about how their songs were created would be a good idea. Although, sometimes it’s best to have a performer that can lay back and do more of a background performance, than a gripping stage performance in some cases. Just make sure to screen your performer to make sure that their content isn’t offensive or raunchy, this can go over really bad at these events.

Festival/Artist Showcase

Bands, Solo Musician/Looping Artist, Performance Artist (Dancer, Magician, Fire Performer, etc), Speed Painters, Contortionist, Mimes, Magicians

Lots of artists and creatives meandering about means something artistic and emotionally/visually appealing will be a great choice. Cover/Top 40’s/Party Bands generally aren’t the best choice here. You want to create a unique, original experience that people will never forget. This is an opportunity to be creative with your choice and go out of the box. Even outright strange can be a good thing, depending on the type of festival.

College Event

Party Band, Cover Band, Comedian, Original Band/Musician, Electronic Band, Live-Set DJ, Top 40’s Band, Impersonator

You’ve got a young audience with a short attention span. They have been born into a culture of the most non-stop stimulation in the history of mankind. You want someone/something that can command attention. Something loud and high energy is usually a good choice, something that will have an energy level that supersedes the audience. Sometimes impersonators can be a hit, if it’s an event where the performer can walk around and mingle.

Bar/Bah Mitzvah

International Band, Dance Band, Party Band

It’s an epic life celebration of a very specific culture. It’s good to have a band who can cater to the song requests, which is not going to happen with your typical cover band. Some bands specialize in Bar/Bah Mitzvahs, so look for this in the band you hire.

Private Event

Anything

Live music is the most common choice for house parties, but a private event can be almost anything and pretty much any type of entertainment will work depending on what you’re going for. Just think of the theme of party and hire an entertainer accordingly. For a retirement party, an acoustic guitarist that plays songs of the 60’s, 70’s and some easy listening would be a good choice. For a luau, a performer who knows some beach tunes would be a good choice.

Baby Shower/Bridal Shower

Solo Musician, Instrumentalist

These generally aren’t wild, raving parties. This is the time for an emotionally bonding celebration of close friends and soft acoustic music is an ideal choice. Although maybe a Brad Pitt impersonator also might be not so bad of a choice if it’s a mostly female group of friends.

Wedding

Live Band, Solo Musician, Instrumentalist, DJ, String Quartet

One of the best 1-2 combinations of any event would be to have a solo musician or live instrumental group perform the ceremony: harpist, pianist, guitarist or string quartet followed by a full band or DJ for the cocktail hour/reception/after party. This works perfectly for the energy and volume levels for a wedding.

Live Entertainment typically does not work well for:

Televised Sporting Events - It’s been tried again and again and it fails every single time. People watching TV and live entertainment don’t mix. Don’t waste your money or a bands time.

Very Early Morning Events - It’s possible this can work, but generally speaking it’s not the best. Most bands perform late at night, sometimes not finishing until 3 in the morning. At 9AM, most people are not ready to hear live music and most bands will be zombies at that time.

Ah…the joy! The un-ending expenses, the coordinating, sending out 1,500 invitations in which 10% of the family responds too. It can be on the stressful side. This is supposed to be one of the happiest, most beautiful days of your entire life, but the planning can place an uncanny burden on you. One thing that will help you out it knowing how to go about booking your wedding entertainment.

So technically you can get any type of wild entertainment for your wedding if you really want (video game character impersonators, fire dancers, Christopher Walken) but for most of the more traditional weddings, it comes down to four choices:

Band

DJ

Strings

Solo Musician

There are pros and cons of each one and you want to make sure that you have just the right fit for your wedding.

Band

Pros:

- So much fun

- Interactive and can liven up a room with their energy

- Can have medleys/mashups and versions of songs you’e never heard before

Cons:

- More members = more money

- More people to coordinate and feed

- The loudest of all the options

Strings:

Pros:

- Emotionally gripping and perfectly suited for weddings

- Very good at adjusting volume

- The type of performance that can grab attention or be background

Cons:

- More people = more money

- Not ideal for dancing

DJ

Pros:

- Will have a huge list of songs to choose from

- Pre-recorded songs don't mess up

- Sometimes are able to MC the wedding as well

- Cheaper than a band

Cons:

- Aren’t really performing live

- Sometimes difficult to distinguish between a hobbyist and professional prior to booking

Solo Musician:

Pros:

- Most cost efficient option

- Can usually perform the ceremony, cocktail hour, reception and background music

- Interactiveness of a band, but without the high noise level

- Easiest to coordinate and set up

- Can move to different locations the easiest

Cons:

- Not ideally suited for dancing

Keep in mind also a few things about your specific wedding; even if you have your heart set on something, the vibe, the location and who will be there is also very important when making your final decision. Some venues have noise restrictions, which can eliminate DJ’s and Bands from being an option. Some venues are outside and depending on the time of the year, can make it very difficult for string players to maintain the tuning of their instruments.

When you have decided what type of musician you want the next thing you want to do is hunt for the right one. Google is your friend. You can literally type in “solo wedding musician near me” and see who is available. Ask your musician to see their website and you should see the following things:

Photos

Video

Client Testimonials

FAQ

Contact

The most efficient of all your options would be to hire a solo musician for the early part of the wedding (seating of the guests, cocktail hour, ceremony) and then have the DJ begin later in the evening once everyone has had a chance to catch up and they want to start dancing. You get the soft, heartfelt music early on and then the dance floor begins after the ceremony is over, it’s the best of both worlds; the least amount of people to coordinate and two very distinctly different types of music to keep things fresh throughout the night. Before you book your entertainer, though, make sure to ask them these five questions CLICK HERE to make sure you get a professional and not a part timer!

They have lots of money. They have the most money to spend on advertising, which means they have a large budget and also likely cost a lot to hire. They aren’t necessarily the best band, but it’s unlikely a band who’s on the front page of your search is not any good. Front page does not equal best, but as a general rule, horrible bands aren’t usually the first to pop up. Scope them out yourself and watch their videos and listen to their audio clips on their website first.

2. They are crafty at SEO. They are great blog writers and content creators and know how to optimize their site to intercept your search. This means they are clever with their marketing and more likely to be good since it takes tremendous and consistent effort to come up in your search without paying large amounts of money, but it still has no verifiable correlation to whether or not they are any good. Do a thorough scan of their website media and check to see if you like what you hear. If you like it, then get em!

3. They are exactly what you’re looking for. They are actually exactly what you are looking for and the search engine actually did what it was supposed to! YAY! Especially if you typed in something specific like “acoustic live loop pedal performer Los Angeles” or “dancing bar mitzvah band celebration, New York City”.

As a general rule of thumb, when I’m looking for anything on the internet, I generally never buy anything that was the result of an ad. Why? Because if that business has the money to pay to get that product or service in front of you, then they are simply going to add that extra money they spent advertising to you to the fee they will charge you for the product. If they don’t do that, they are loosing money, which isn’t a very smart business tactic. It’s better to find something organically and pay what it’s worth, than pay the higher fee they will take from your pocket to hire them. There are of course exceptions to this, but as a general rule, that’s a good thing to shoot for.

So if you are in the greater Los Angeles area:

Los Angeles County

Orange County

Ventura County

Inland Empire

Here are a few quick recommendations to save yourself hours of scrolling, comparing and inspecting. There’s a lot more than you think. Not all kinds of entertainment are equal, though. Some acts require the audience to completely shut up and pay full attention while others can perform in a way that allows for some people to catch up and discuss while others can meander over to watch or listen. Here are five options in order from most intense to most relaxed and you can make a choice.

Fire Performer/Cirque Acts

(intensity:10)

There really is no way you can ever have an act with fire or swords being thrown that doesn’t require the undivided attention of every single person in the room. This is your full scale the show begins now type of act, so you want to make sure if you have this type of performance, there is a time in the event when everyone can be silent and watch.

Full Band

(intensity: 10 - 7)

Similar to the Cirque Acts, a full band is typically a “shut up and listen” type of performance. They are usually very interactive and encourage the crowd to get up and dance. Although with bands, because they are quite loud, people who aren’t really big on dancing or singing along can meander to the outskirts of the room or the event and have a conversation, provided they can hear each other. Keep in mind this is essentially the loudest of all the entertainment choices.

Hypnotist/Speaker

(intensity 8 - 4)

A hypnotist or motivational speaker will require the audiences full attention, but is significantly safer than acts with fire, chainsaws or acrobatics and significantly lower in volume than a band. They can be fun, usually are very interactive with the crowd and can leave people inspired and talking about the event for a long time.

Impersonator

(intensity 5 - 2)

Impersonators are quite amusing. They can either do a stage show or they can walk around and mingle with people in character. They are a very good choice a bit more low-key than some of the other performers. They are also a cost-efficient option and easy to coordinate since you won’t have to have 15 people on your stage.

Mood Musician

(intensity 6 - 1)

These are an ideal choice for a more laid back event. A mood musician or solo performer is capable of performing popular music that people will recognize but also able to play ambient instrumental music that creates a tone and setting for the event, that will fit with the energy of the room. They are a perfect fit for an event that needs a less intense performance and can either perform on stage or be the perfect background performances.

The infamous “Craigslist” is actually usually overlooked and laughed away at a place full of scammers, creeps and unprofessionals. Well, yes, these people for some reason do gravitate towards this platform for whatever strange reason, BUT if you know how to use it, this site is actually a little treasure trove of good opportunities for many, including people trying to book live music.

How to use Craigslist the WRONG way:

Click on “musicians” and scroll through the endless listings that include posts like this:

“death core band searching for hype man to disembowel themselves on stage”

“serious singer looking for drummer for live shows: sorry, no pay ever”

“legendary guitar player no know has ever heard of available for your next private show in your basement”

You will immediately realize you now know the world is five times weirder than you thought and still don’t have a live performer.

How to use Craigslist the RIGHT way:

Click on “Create Post”. Follow the instructions that Craigslist instructs you to: include the date, time, which kind of genre/band you are looking for:

You can request your performer by genre:

Top 40’s

Pop

Classics

Adult Contemporary

Blues

Folk

Singer/Songwriter

Variety

etc.

Example of a good post:

"I am looking for a performer who can play top 40’s songs on the acoustic guitar"

Or you can request your performer by what artists they are similar to:

Jack Johnson

Michael Jackson

John Mayer

Bruno Mars

Bill Withers

Steve Miller Band

Sublime

Example:

"I am looking for a performer who plays music similar to: Sublime, Jack Johnson, John Mayer"

If you have any professional pictures of your establishment, an event flyer or any digital media, post it when you are prompted to the “upload pictures” section.

After you have all the into submitted, your post will be up for 30 days. It costs $10 to post your ad, which is extremely low if you consider that most entertainment sites and agencies are going to charge anywhere from 10% to 50% of your fee for booking an artist, so keep that in mind. Now with Craigslist, you will get a mix of completely unprofessional responses and very professional responses, so make sure when you are scrolling through your email, you go to each artists website and watch their videos and read their client testimonials. If they don’t have a great looking website, client testimonials and videos of them playing DO. NOT. BOOK. THEM. These are absolutely 100% essential indicators that the person you are booking is a professional. With a little time and patience, you should have a few very good options to choose from.

Congratulations, you have now earned your yellow belt in navigating Craigslist. May the force be with you.

(and also with you). Just make sure you don’t go to the personal ads after 9PM, it’s a scary place.

You might have noted “sports party” was left out. That is very much intentional. Sports and bands mix like cats and water. It’s generally a hodgepodge of overstimulation. The audience is generally too distracted to enjoy either when a venue is broadcasting a sports event and having live music. I have personally experienced this both as a patron to an establishment and as a member of a band on countless occasions. It just doesn't work. The sports people are annoyed at the volume of the band and the people who want to watch the band are annoyed at the sports people taking up good space. In most situations, avoid having live music during a sporting event, unless the music act is actually a half-time show or pre/post show entertainment for the event itself, but never, EVER have them both going on at the same time. It just doesn’t work well.

Using price points to tell if your performer is a hack, a professional or is seriously overcharging you.

You know Goldilocks and the three bears, right?

This performer overcharges.

Well let’s say Goldilocks was an event planner in charge of hiring live entertainment for companies corporate events. She scrolled the internet and came across someone who seemed to be a great fit. She looked at their price and WHAT!? $10,000 for one person to play music for an hour? What? I mean, she’d understand if this was Ed Sheeran, but this is just some random musician on the internet. How are they this expensive? Heart surgeons don’t make this much. No one’s life is at risk at this event..except hers if she spends ten grand on music and doesn’t walk in with Nick Jonas or a six piece dance band. Hmmm…..”what the heck,” she said and hired them. They were professional, courteous, well dressed and had a nice looking contract and did everything very well. The guests enjoyed the music and the performer sounded great. The event was a success and everyone walked away happy. That was until corporate realized how much money was spent on the solo entertainer. She vowed to be more weary of the budget for next time, as this entertainer was way too expensive.

This performer undercharges.

A few weeks went by and another event was approaching. She went looking through the deep recesses of Google, Bing, Yahoo…so many options but alas! She found one! Everything looked great! A decent website, videos, audio, hmmm…..wait…WHAT!? $150 for a 2 hour set!? What a steal! Mission accomplished! She found an artist who seemed every bit as good as the first but for not even 2% of the price of the first! BAM. She hired them on the spot and everything was great, or so she thought…..

The day of the show, the entertainer called 30 minutes before show time letting her know they would be late. When they showed up, they were wearing flip flops, khakis, a white T-shirt and a heavily worn blazer that didn’t match. They played a few popular songs, but were reading the lyrics off of an iPad and forgot the words and stopped in the middle of the song. Ten different attendees complained the volume was too loud and she realized that this was a terrible mistake. She had hired an amateur who was able to lowball because they didn’t have a business model in place. Argh. After a stressful and awkward rest of the the event, she vowed to get it perfect next time, as this performer was just way to cheap.

This performer was just right.

A third event was approaching soon. This was a huge one, an event to celebrate the milestones of some of the companies top producing employees. She wanted this one to be a perfect balance of well used budget. She scoured and scoured and after going through dozens and maybe even hundred of different options, she found someone. Their website looked professional, they had videos, sound clips, client testimonials, even an FAQ page. They were the exact sound she was looking for and could play upbeat popular music or lay back and just be ambient background music. “Alright, alright, don’t get your hopes up, remember last time” she thought. She sent a detailed message through their online form and waited for a quote. A few hours later, she got a quote. BOOYA!! “Send the contracts, let’s do this”. Soft acoustic guitar enveloped the background as the company celebrated their achievements. After everyone had caught up, they introduced some vocals and played some classics and top 40’s. Harriet and Tom from HR actually got up and danced. Tom never dances….but pretty much everyone knew he always liked Harriet. Oh the things you do for love. Needless to say, the event was a hit. Everyone loved the music and how it complimented the events of the evening. She was thanked over and over again for doing such a good job and everyone lived happily ever after.

So in conclusion, if a solo performer who doesn’t seem to have a big reputation is charging tens of thousands of dollars, they are probably overcharging you. If they charging a couple hundred, you shouldn’t take them seriously as they clearly don’t have a sustainable business model. Always make sure to go a performers website, watch their videos, listen to their music, see how many shows and how many years they have been a performer, read their testimonials and inspect their set list to see if they will be a good fit. If everything checks out, send them your budget for the event. What should you realistically expect to pay? No less than $350 and no more than $700 (unless they have some specialty "show" that involves equipment, lights and a more elaborate production OR if they have a reputation behind them - American Idol finalist, semi-famous or famous touring artist, etc)

So, the best way to figure out how to book your next corporate entertainer is by figuring out the following:

Which type of corporate event are you having:

Appreciation Event - informal worker gathering, usually the most fun; cruises, converters, sports events, etc.

Board Meeting - review of business performance

Company Milestone Event - celebration of the accomplishments of the workers and/or company

Executive Retreat/Incentive Program - business development, organizational planning paired with leisure

Golf Event - a corporate leader favorite, it’s pretty self explanatory

Product Launch - internal meetings or launch parties, these feel like parties. Apple and Tesla love launches.

Seminar/Conference - delivering a tailored message to a targeted audience, usually with keynote speakers and multiple topics

Trade Show - the flea market of the corporate world, a showcase of companies products/services with the goal of lead generation

Team Building Event - typically outdoors, physically involving activities to let the employees bond in a non-work setting

Keep in mind these extremely important ideas when choosing your entertainment:

- A performance that will not be offensive or politically incorrect

- A performer that can work to read the audience an perform accordingly

- A balance of familiarity and something complete unique

- Appealing to all demographics and audiences

- A highly experienced and reliable professional performer

Chose the most well suited entertainment for that event:

Full Band

DJ

Fire Performer

Dancer

Magician

Solo Musician/Looping Artist

There are many very different options when choosing entertainment, but sometimes choosing something “good” isn’t

always choosing something that will fit the event well, even if the performance itself is great. You want something that

will fit the overarching theme and mood of the event itself. A performer that is able to tailor their performance is of

tremendous value, as most performers have mastered a “show” but the show is always the same show.

Knowing that your entertainer not only has experience, it’s also a good idea to read their client testimonials,

watch videos of them performing and see if their style of performance will be the right fit for your event.

Full Band - They are best suited for large scale appreciation events and party like atmospheres. The energy of a full band is excellent, but they will require a large amount of staging area, time to set up and break down, available electrical outlets. They are usually best suited for very large, louder events as full bands are typically the loudest of all the performances.

DJ - Another great choice for appreciation events. A DJ is a great choice of the goal is to get the dance floor bumping, but most corporate events do not call for this type of entertainment. Sometimes a DJ is an option best suited as a follow-up act to another performer, when everyone has had a few drinks and wants to dance.

Fire Performer/Cirque Performer - Potentially a good choice for a product launch related to fire or a special event at an executive retreat.

They can be one of the most spellbinding performers you will find, but there is always an inherent risk involved when using fire in a performance.

Magician - A good fit for a seminar or a trade show, they usually have a very dynamic show that intrigues audiences and almost everyone loves magic. Over time has become an expected choice of many corporate planners and is a solid choice, but magicians typically will require a large space, a backstage area for setting up and for full and undivided attention for the duration of the performance.

Solo Musician/Looping Artist - They have an easy set up, require little space and can typically be a center stage type of performance or a background music/ambiance setting performance where it doesn’t have to be the center of everyone’s focus. A looping artist is able to sound like a full band but only by themselves. Looping allows the performer to create many layers of their instrument to give the effect of many people playing simultaenously. This is an ideal choice for appreciation events, company milestone, seminar/conference, and a nice addition to the atmosphere of a trade show.

Once you’ve decided what type of performer you want, look over the following criteria and make sure you get an experienced professional who will be reliable and able to compliment the atmosphere you are trying to create. It is always a good idea to ask the performer for:

- credentials

- client testimonials

- website, social media, video/audio

Generally, golf events, board meetings and team building events aren’t well suited for most forms of entertainment, however, if you really want to go above and beyond in your creative planning, you really can’t say never.

Ok, so you just looked through a dozen articles each titled “100’ entertainment ideas to try at your wedding. So now you’ve got 1,200 ideas. Awesome. So you have plenty of ideas. So let me explain why instead of comparing hundreds of ideas, you should just consider one. The ultimate wedding entertainment idea is based off of:

Coordination Involved

Logistics

Space needed to set up

Risk/Danger factors

Price

Popularity

Volume Levels

What is the best overall choice for wedding entertainment?

Out of all the possible combinations and entertainment options for your wedding, the ultimate choice for wedding day entertainment is a solo musician for the first part and a DJ for the later part.

Why is this the ultimate choice?

The early part of your big day will need something lower volume, something mood setting and familiar that people can engage with if they want, but also catch up with friends and family at the same time. A solo musician is perfect for this part of the day. Later on, people will drink a little or will have loosed up after saying hi to everyone and many of them will want to dance, this is where the DJ comes in.

Why not just a DJ?

Because there is a very specific and beautiful quality of live music that cannot be replicated by pre-recorded tracks. There is a reason why millions and millions of weddings have live music; it’s a time tested and beautiful way of expressing the thoughts and emotions that are in the air on that day.

Why not just a solo musician?

You will have a lot of people that may want to get their dance on after the ceremony and the cocktail hour. Some solo musicians can switch things up and play upbeat cover songs after the ceremony, but when people are in “I wanna dance” mode, something loud and thumping is best and a good DJ can read your crowd and get them jumping and singing along quickly.

What about hiring a pianist?

A pianist is also an excellent choice, but it’s not that easy to lug an 800 pound piano around. The venue would not only have to have a piano, but have one close enough to the ceremony, cocktail hour and/or reception where you want it to be heard. If that’s the case, then by all means, do it, but it’s not always the case.

Why not a string quartet?

That’s also a great choice, but requires a little more logistical planning, preparing extra meals, and space consideration.

Why not just get a live band for later in the night?

A DJ can basically build a custom playlist prior to the big day and have every song ready. A band will have to learn any songs that they don’t already know and this takes time and effort. If you want a wedding band that is not amateur, you are looking at a starting point of around $3000 - $4000. Some wedding bands cost $10,000 or more and most of them are worth it, so if you have the budget, then I’d actually advise you to go all out on the entertainment and get a really expensive and really good wedding band. But if you’re looking for the ultimate balance of the factors mentioned above, you can get truly professional entertainment for a lower price with a solo musician and a DJ.

Why not get a celebrity impersonator or a magician?

They are both great choices, but not the best fit for weddings. Two people are publicly making a sacred vow to love one another for the rest of their lives; magic tricks and jokes aren’t really going to set the mood for most people. Emotion, nostalgia, connectedness, love and memories are the things this day is about and that is best captured with music.

What about a solo musician that sings?

This is another great deal where you get another feature for proportionally much less money that what an extra vocalist would charge. If you can find an instrumentalist who can play and sing, you have another bonus for your wedding.

Who’s going to MC my wedding?

Your DJ should have that as part of their services. If they don’t offer it, find another DJ.

Conclusion:

The solo musician/DJ combo involves the least amount of people to coordinate, the least amount extra meals you’ll need to have ready, an easier to control volume level than a band, little to no risk (some wedding entertainers use fire, swords or acrobatics believe it or not and they are excellent but just a tad on the risky side), a very cost efficient option, a relatively small space for both to set up with an enormous energy level difference that will fit the quiet first half of the day and party-esque second half of the day. So when you are booking your solo musician and DJ keep this in mind - you can save a lot of money going this route but don’t try the bargain entertainers.

What should you expect to pay in 2018?

Solo Guitarist

$300 - $600 for the first hour

$100 - $200 for each additional hour

Solo Harpist

$300 - $800 for first hour

$150 - $250 for each additional hour

Instrumentalist/Vocalist

$350 - $800 for the first hour

$150 - $250 for each additional hour

DJ

$700 - $2,500 for the evening

(Keep in mind these are average going rates and that some performers offer packages and discounts in certain situations.)

Pricing Conclusion:

So before you think that you will get the lowest rate guitarist for $300 and lowest rate for a DJ for $700 and only spending $1000 on music, you have to factor in a few other things. The lowest rates will usually pay for one hour or service, not a full evening and not MC services by the DJ or special song requests from the musician, travel, lodging, etc. Realistically you are looking at $1500 - 2000, which is a rate significantly lower than most professional wedding bands and/or band/DJ combinations. This is a bare minimum number, though. This is your red flag amount. By going lower than this, you put yourself into unprofessional territory. Any musician who charges less than $250 and any DJ who charges less than $600 to play a wedding is very likely to not be professional. You can head to a trusted wedding entertainment site like Wedding Wire right now and scan some prices to get some figures if you need some ballpark figures.

A Word of Serious Caution:

There are some people that have weaseled their way into the market as hobbyists with full time incomes aside from music, so price isn’t really that important to them. They can play or DJ without needing to consider business expenses but generally are significantly lower quality than full-time performers, since they do this for fun and not a profession. BE WEARY OF THESE PERFORMERS! There have been many infuriated brides and disappointed families members as a result of trying to pinch every penny and get their big day entertainment to a bare-bones minimum. Don’t hire an entertainer that doesn’t have a website, videos, audio, client testimonials and lots of experience. Keep these in mind when searching and happy hunting!

If you would like your event to be profitable, one thing you should consider is how to quantify the value of your entertainment to be worth their asking price. How do you do this? There are some specific things you should look at when booking your entertainer to make sure you get a high quality service.

Professionalism.

This is the easiest thing to determine. Check for all of these things in your prospect. If they don’t have them all, find someone else. These are absolutely necessary for a professional performer.

Professional Looking Website.

Promo Video.

Audio Samples.

Video Samples.

Client Testimonials.

Education.

It is wise to choose an entertainer with a degree in what you are hiring them to do. Your entertainment should be of the same caliber that your company itself adheres to, so check for a college education in their field of performance. This is an indicator the performer has invested seriously into their craft and will be of a very high quality.

Experience.

You watch the video and audio and they sound great but they show up and it’s awful. What happened? You have to make sure you not only listen to them, but also check for their experience as a performer. With professional production tools, almost anyone can make themselves sound great on video and audio but without years of experience, you may get a falsely advertised product. In terms of how many years they have been playing, think of it the same way you would as if hiring an employee. If they have less than three years experience, they are still getting the fundamentals down and although it is possible they are great and exactly what you are looking for, the odds of this being the case drastically decreases.

1 - 2 years - Novice

3 - 5 years - Apprentice

5 - 10 years - Journeyman

10 + years - Master

It’s a scientifically verified observation that 10,000 hours of practice are needed in order to be considered a master of something. This is true of performing as well. So if you can’t find how many years they have been performing, ask them. 10+ years of experience is your best choice when determining who to choose, however, some entertainers may play once a month, which does not equate to the same level of proficiency. So on top of how many years, see how many shows they have played. If you can’t find it somewhere on their website, then ask how many shows they have played. Ideally, your performer will have over 10 years experience and over 1000 performances.

1 - 200 - Novice

200 - 500 - Apprentice

500 - 1000 - Journeyman

1000 + - Master

Versatility.

It’s completely fine to hire a performer who does one thing really well, but in the event that there needs to be a change last minute for some reason or you just want a little more customizability, it’s good to check your artist’s website to see if they are versatile. A few things that add some nice choices to your performers checklist are:

Instrumental Songs

High Energy/Low energy songs

Loop pedal songs

Songs from different genres and decades

Talent.

This one is a bit more ambiguous and harder to quantify. How do you spot talent? It’s kind of like music that plays in a movie - when it’s really good, you feel it, but when it’s really bad, you notice it’s really off. When you watch and listen to the media on the performers website, do you like the way it sounds? The way they play? The tone of their voices? Their instrumentation? The mix of the music? A video of them performing live would be ideal to watch so you can see exactly how they will sound and look performing and if you like what you see, then book em!

Go through and look at each one of these attributes to see if you are making a good investment with your money. These are all of the most important qualities to look for in your entertainment choice. Taking time to look over these things will give you assurance that your performer will be worth what you are paying, very likely to be well received by your audience and give you a good ROI with the money you spend hiring them.

So you’re booking a show and you need a musician or a band? You have a lot of options and it is very easy these days to book musical entertainment for your next event.

1. Use an entertainment booking site.

This is about as easy as it gets. Websites like: Gigmasters, Gigsalad, the Knot, Wedding Wire, Styckie, all have databases of musicians for you to pick from. Google a website that sounds fun and start searching. Each site has instructions on how to go about booking the artist you like.

2. Find the artist directly.

Keeping an eye out at open mic nights, live concerts and simply typing in your city or area followed by the word “musician” and scrolling through the videos and seeing which ones you like the best. For example, if you live in Los Angeles, CA type “Los Angeles, CA musician” into youtube and start looking through the videos to find one that looks like someone who might fit. This can be a whole lot of fun because you can find some really great internet treasures using this method.

3. Make them come to you.

One of the most unused resources for booking entertainment is Craigslist. Yes. Seriously. Here’s the catch: your placement will cost $10 to post but will stay up for over 30 days, which is longer than enough time to attract some entertainment options and a significantly lower price than what any 3rd party booking sites are going to charge

If you don’t have an account, set one up, it’s free, requires no commitment and hardly any effort.

1. Go to www.craigslist.org and log in

2. create a posting (upper left hand corner of the site)

3. Choose a location that is closest to you (even if the selection doesn’t give your exact location, just pick which one is relatively close to you.

4. Choose “Gig Offered”

5. Choose “Talent Gigs”

6. Fill in the details of the event

7. Confirm that the map is correctly displaying your location

8. Upload any artwork, promo materials, associated with the event

9. Confirm your selection and await a slew of very unprofessional responses with a few great responses. Follow up with the great responses and ignore the awful ones.

Gigsalad/Gigmasters

Should I use Gigmasters, Gigsalad or directly book an artist? Lets look at the platforms to see what the best choice would be for your upcoming event.

Gigmasters:

Over 25,000 people every day use Gigmasters to book entertainment. It is one of the largest platforms for finding entertainment on all of the internet. It is very highly lauded by most event planners and people hosting private parties and events. There is not only entertainment, but pretty much every type of event professional imaginable: musicians, jugglers, clowns, impersonators, bartenders, caterers, sommeliers, planners, florists, photographers, make up artists, limos, party bus rentals, speakers, magicians…you get the idea. However, there is a catch.

The issue with gigmasters is this: when you, the client, submits their event info, a bunch of entertainers are notified and then are locked into a bidding war in order to get the gig. This may seem like a great thing for you, the buyer, and it can be, because you will can get very low rate options on your performers. However, this style of choosing entertainment creates the idea that a performer is a commodity and as some planners have found out the hard way, you will sometimes get a very disappointing performance from a non-professional or a performer who is a poor fit who was willing to give a better deal than their competitors. It is better and a much safer choice to pay a little extra for someone with a long track record and has lots of client testimonials then to try and get a dirt cheap performance, which is very likely to happen on a platform that encourages performers to underbid one another to get to play your event.

Pros:

- huge online platform

- entertainment and event professionals of all kinds

- widely known brand

- great customer service

- fast way to book entertainment

- usually can get very low cost performers

Cons:

- Risk chance of non-professional entertainers who offer low rates

- Bidding war style contact, sometimes encourages entertainers who aren’t the right fit to respond

- charges highly visible performers a gross of roughly 25-45% in fees so sometimes can lead to overinflated booking rates

Gigsalad:

A very similar platform to Gigmasters, but tends to be a little more streamlined and simple to use. There is generally less bidding on Gigsalad and you can navigate to the artist you want without getting a swarm of quotes from may artists who won’t be the right fit for your event. There have been some complaints about a sometimes hard to reach customer service, however I personally have never had this problem as a vendor, they have always been easy to reach, reliable and friendly. Gig salad is very easy to target specific areas so you get very relevant and close by performers.

Pros:

- More streamlined platform

- Allows direct contact between buyer and vendor prior to booking

- Decent selection of vendors and high quality entertainers

Cons:

- less than stellar customer service

- much smaller platform

- many non-professionals on the site

Direct Website of an Artist:

This will take a little more time, but if you do your research you can almost always find a great performer who is perfectly suited for your event. With a little time on google, browsing at websites on the first 1-2 pages of your desired keywords “los angeles acoustic entertainment”, “singing guitarist”, etc. you can decide yourself and go to each performers website. Any serious performer will have a professionally laid out site with client testimonials, a performance description or set list, professional photographs, video/audio, and a contact page. It’s sometimes a good idea to check and see if the performer has a frequently asked questions page and see what answers they have for you. You won’t have to worry about any third party platform skimming a portion of your payment, contact between you and the performer will be direct from start to finish and you can personally determine the way they carry themselves apart from a large well known platform. This is generally a little more time consuming but is the best way to find the most suitable performer and can even lead to establishing a long term professional relationship for future events.

Pros:

- No underbidding sales pitches

- No entertainers who are completely unrelated to what you're looking for bidding on your event

- No booking fees going to a third party platform

- Very easy to determine level of professionalism

- Much easier to communicate

- Easier to determine if performer is the right fit for your event

Cons:

- Takes more time

Entertainment Agencies

Don’t do what most people do when you’re looking for an entertainment agency: type “entertainment agency” into Google, pick the first ad that pops up and ask for a quote. I mean, you can do whatever you want, but I wouldn’t advise that. Why?

There are a few ways an “entertainment agencies” page gets on the first page of a search engine (Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc.) and in front of you.

1. Paid advertising.

With a budget of a few grand a month, you too can force your page to the top ranks of Google! You don’t have to be a good business, or even ethical, you just have to have lots of money! Yaaaaay! Paid ad’s are a useful tool for helping businesses reach clients but don’t always click because it’s the first thing you see. I’m not saying businesses that use paid ad’s are evil, but just think about it. Someone had to pay money to find you. If the company has a profitable business model (and they clearly do if they have the cash flow for Google AdWords), it’s likely that the money that was paid to find you will in some clever way, be added to the fee that you are charged for booking the entertainment. Also, some ad campaigns haven’t perfected their targeting so you might be looking for “corporate entertainment” but the agency specializes in heavy metal bands and that wouldn’t be helpful. Unless your company really likes Metallica. So this will be either a HUGE business with a massive marketing budget, indicating they are likely pricey, or if they are smaller, they are going to add the cost of the entertainer you book back into the price they charge you. So there is a better way to find your entertainer. Read on.

2. SEO.

Also known as search engine optimization, SEO is a great way for an entertainment agency to get in front of you.

“Number one entertainment agency near you is an entertainment agency with some of the most best top acoustic entertainers that specialize in entertaining of most entertained clients.”

Seen this before? Have you read articles that sound like they are written by robots with all kinds of “helpful advice” that isn’t really helpful at all, but just rambling sentences that seem to reiterate the same points over and over? Yeah, that’s the dark side of SEO blogging. Many companies will hire out bloggers on fiverr (it’s a website where people do stuff for $5) to spit out huge volumes of content to get their websites in front of you. Many of these bloggers do not speak native English but know how algorithms work so they write articles that repeat the same words over and over and over and over and….so that the algorithms pick up on this and shoot the website to the top, where you click on it and choose your entertainers. Some entertainment websites really put good info into their blogs but some are just trying to flood Google with high volumes of bad content, so it’s a good idea to read a couple blog posts and see if they are well written, or just fluffy nonsense. If they are fluffy nonsense, then you should hire their entertainers with the same caution you’d have them write your own companies blogs. Now, ranking for SEO is a more laborious method than paid advertising, so it can be seen as a more noble and authentic way of reaching you, but still there is a better way.

3. Being the thing you're looking for and having top quality entertainers.

The best way to get your entertainers: from a website that didn’t use ad’s or clever internet tricks but just is so good that the quality of its business practices automatically brought it to the top spot in all of the internet. Lots of good reviews, client testimonials, word of mouth all consistent high quality content all mean this is real deal. This is a truly impressive feat, kind of like that guy that climbed to Mount Everest in nothing but shorts (his name is Wim Hoff). Also, you ever heard of Sriracha? If not, punch yourself in the face, it’s the best spicy condiment EVER. It’s that red stuff that people put on everything…even if it’s disgustingly inappropriate. Well, the company is a billion dollar company and they are an internationally known brand that has NEVER….SPENT….A DOLLAR…ON ADS. Ever. The founder not only has never spend a single penny in advertising but has never hired a salesman. Why? Because they don’t need it. The product speaks for itself. Similarly, if you are searching for entertainment for your next corporate event, wedding, private party, etc. and you come across a site that didn’t use an ad or have awkwardly written blogs that repeat the same words over and over, then you may have just found your internet treasure.

So, if you don’t feel like reading all of that stuff above, here’s the Sparknotes version for finding entertainment for your next event:

1. Refrain from choosing an agency that paid to get in front of you before you explore other options. They aren’t necessarily the best, the are simply the first.

2. If the entertainment agency has a blog, go on there and read some posts, if it’s keyword-pandering nonsense, keep looking.

3. If the blogs are helpful, clearly written by a native English speaker and provide thoroughly researched information and the agency has reached you organically, there’s a very, very high chance they run a very good business. They pay attention to detail in all the little places many ignore and they are likely less costly than ones on a site that’s advertises. This is your best bet.

As an entertainer who has tried many methods of reaching my own clients, I know most of the tricks that agencies and entertainers use, so don’t let the method by which we reach you make you assume the quality of our entertainment is the same! I want to make sure you get every dollar out of your entertainer, so keep these things in mind when searching for one, always make sure you can see their videos, audio and client testimonials as well!

Happy hunting, classy planner.

They are averages based on current and competitive rates for professional musicians, bands an DJ's for 2019 and 2020. Although there are always exceptions to rules, these are generally true and should be considered as guidelines when choosing your wedding musician.

So how much should you expect to pay for live music on your wedding day?

Full Band/Group

less than $2000 Very low price (an indicator of likely non-professional or part time band; can be risky)

$2000 to $3000 Lower price band

$4000 - $6000 Average price of a wedding band in the US in 2018

$6000 - $10,000 High price bands (high quality, very professional, usually larger bands with more people)

$10,000 + Highest cost, largest and highest-level performing bands in the country (worth it if you have the budget)

Soloist

Less than $300 Very low price (possible part timer or non-professional; can be risky)

$300 - $500 Lower price solo performer

$500 - $800 Average price of a professional solo performer in the US in 2018

DJ

$700 - $1000 Lower price DJ’s

$1000 - $1500 Average price of a DJ in 2018

$1500 - $2500 Premium DJ w/ the best equipment and playlists

$2500 + Top line w/ the best equipment and playlists

(sometimes Live Set DJ’s and DJ’s who have instrumentalist perform with them will have higher rates)

What questions should I ask the musicians?

- What genres of music do you play?

- Can I see your set list?

- Can you learn new songs for my wedding?

- Do you come with sound/lights?

- If we are really loving the performance, how much do you charge for overtime?

- Can you help me pick out music for my wedding?

- Do you have videos/audio?

- How do you factor in your breaks?

- How much space do you need?

- What are your rates?

- Do you have any other services that I might be interested in?

Should I feed the musicians?

Yes. Absolutely. Often during all the craziness of the big day, providing meals for the musicians gets forgotten. It’s hard to go hours and hours of driving and performing without eating so it’s greatly appreciated when planners have meals for their performers. You will make them very happy by providing a meal.

Should I tip the musicians?

Yes. There are two ways to do this. A cash tip at the end of the night and a detailed online review indicates you were well pleased with everything and lets the musician know you were happy with their services.

What’s the best way to save the most money without hiring musicians who aren’t professional?

Hire an instrumentalist for the ceremony/cocktail hour and a DJ for the reception. You can save a hundreds, possibly thousands, and you’ll get the mellow emotional music in the early part of the day and a dance floor packing energy for the end of the day. A great professional soloist is about $800 and a great DJ is $1500. This will run you about $2300. Compare this with a professional band which start around $4000 and you’re looking at $1,700 in savings. BOOM! Now you can get those origami swan napkins your aunt kept pestering you about.

Every Breath You Take - Sting

This song is a promise a man makes to his ex - “I’ll be watching you”. No it’s not about someone looking down from heaven and no it’s not endearing. It’s 100% about stalking in a very “I own you forever no matter what” kind of way. Not an ideal start to a marriage.

Crash Into Me - Dave Matthews

This is actually about a peeping tom who is actively stalking a young girl and watching her from afar, with a non-existent relationship that they share. And no, that isn’t a rumor, that’s actually directly from the mouth of Dave Matthews himself during his VH1 storytellers segment.

50 Ways to Leave Your Lover - Paul Simon

I mean, it doesn’t get any clearer why you wouldn’t play this. Just read the title. Although if you and your fiancé love irony, then have at it.

If Your Wanna Be Happy - Jimmy Soul

“If you wanna be happy for the rest of your life, never make a pretty woman your wife….so from my personal point of view get an ugly girl to marry you.” See the logic is, if you marry a pretty woman, her good looks will allow her to be demanding and controlling and you’ll have to deal with it because she’s pretty and you’re not. If she looks like Quasimodo, then you can do whatever you want because she’s lucky to have you. Daaaaang, son that is MESSED up. Please don’t start your marriage with this idea.

Jessies Girl - Rick Springfield

So if the groom’s name is Jessie, I can’t really fathom a more inappropriate song to play. Just don’t. Even if their name is Shamus or Shunty or Dilbert, just stay from all songs that hint that one of the best men or the audience members my have unrequited love towards the bride.

Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For - U2

It sure sounds romantic, but really listen to the words. The whole purpose of your wedding is a declaration that you HAVE found what you’re looking for. So, you might want to avoid this one.

You’re Gonna Live Forever in Me - John Mayer

It’s truly a beautiful song, but it’s written from the perspective of someone in the seats watching the bride get married who is not the groom. “When the pastor asks the pew for reasons he can’t marry you, I’ll keep my word and my seat, but you’re gonna live forever in me”. What worse thing can you think of then one of your own friends pledging an undying secret love for your bride? This is about as bad as “Jessies Girl”.

White Wedding - Billy Idol

This song is actually about an ex-girlfriend who is going to marry someone else. “There’s nothin’ pure in this world” - hmmm…someone’s a little angry about whoever is getting married. Probably want to avoid feeling like someone is going to sabotage your big day and cut this one from the list.

It Wasn't Me - Shaggy

Oh yeah, everyone fell for the cute sounding track and innocent vocals and shaggy's unintelligible sing-talking. But did anyone really listen to the words except for the "It wasn't me part"? Clearly not. The singer gets caught cheating, red handed. Literally there is a video of him cheating and he stands in front of this poor woman and bold face lies to her about it. Bad. Just, so bad.

It Ain’t Me, Babe - Bob Dylan

Not that anyone in their right mind would ever actually want this at their wedding, “Go away from my window, leave at your own chosen speed” pretty much sums up the attitude of the song…which is about as opposite of a wedding song as you can get.

And if you really like irony, then go for one of these songs. In fact, it would be hilarious to make a playlist out of these and watch some of the more attentive guests squirm and eventually ask if you two are ok. Have fun and congratulations on your upcoming day!

An efficient, thorough method for booking entertainment for your next corporate event. This includes booking a band, a solo musician, a duo, trio, or other live performer. The rules are pretty much the same for each in terms of the booking process.

1. Know your audience.

What is the demographic of your audience? Consider as many factors as you can. It doesn’t have to be a scientific endeavor, but just keep in mind who will be at your event and what they may like and dislike. Will your attendees be coming by themselves or with signifiant others and/or friends? What is the age of your audience (mostly millennial/young people? Mostly baby boomers/more experienced professionals? A mix of everything?) Will there be children at the event? Who do you have on your VIP list? Is the crowd a rowdy one or a more laid back one? Once you’ve got a good sense of who’s going to be there, you can being figuring out what type of performer you want.

2. Know your options.

First off, make sure you act is clean and appropriate. Foul comics, sensual/erotic performances, super loud bands and/or innuendo filled comedic routines are going to get cringes and complaints. A “G” or “PG” rated show is your best bet. Most performers are not inappropriate anyways, but it’s something to think about, because if you’re not looking for it beforehand, it’s not good to find out in the middle of the performance. So here are the most popular choices of live entertainment for corporate events:

Band

Band - A high energy and fun choice but even good ones are loud. If you audience wants to dance, then get them, but be weary of volume.

Solo Musician - Live music with more manageable volume. Beautiful, moving and easy to coordinate and great at setting an ambiance without overpowering everything.

Magician - comedy magicians are usually a great choice, just make sure they specialize in corporate events.

Comedian - another good choice but be weary of their routine’s content. Make sure it’s not vulgar or offensive before booking.

Caricature Artist - a low stress option, no volume issues and people actually get a tangible thing to take home when they are done

Cirque Performer - a wild, inspirational experience like no other. One of the biggest acts to coordinate and most risky but it is almost always worth it.

Impersonator - a unique choice that is interactive and surprising. Make sure their character is one the audience will love

3. Find Your Favorite.

Once you know what type of performer you want, then it’s time to go hunting. A google search of “magician for hire” or “solo musician for hire” should bring up some websites with lots of options. Make sure that when you find an act you are thinking about hiring that your act as all of these things:

Professional Website - This is a no-brainer. Every serious professional has a website. Also take note: an outdated website = an outdated act.

You can judge a book by its cover in this situation.

Video/audio of Performance or Talent - You’ll want to see what you’re buying. Watch several videos or if they have a promo video take a good look and make sure you like what you see.

Client Testimonials - The more the better. Specific testimonials are best. These are your assurance that they are professional, reliable and good at what they do.

Experience - 1-3 years is a novice. 3-5 an apprentice. 5-9 a tradesmen. 10+ a master. It’s ideal to get a master of their craft. Ask how long they’ve been performing.

Degree or Professional Training - Would you want the pilot of your plane to have been educated on youtube? Nope. Why would your entertainment choice any different?

4. Get a Quote.

Some entertainers will have a contact form with all the info you need to give them right on their website. This should ask you for the details of your event and allow you to request a quote from your entertainer. If you don’t see one, you can just send them an email. It’s helpful to include your:

Number of guests

Date/Time/Address

Name of Company

Theme of Event

Special Requests

Budget.

This will help streamline communication and allow them to give you a fast answer. Many serious entertainers won’t even respond without all of this information first. Booking and scheduling takes a lot of time in itself, so for full time performers, there is only enough time in a day to respond to serious inquiries. DO NOT I repeat DO NOT simply book who costs the least amount of money. This will be your event planning suicide. Price is just one of many factors but with entertainment you will get what you pay for. Pinching pennies here has led to nightmare performances and some are actually so bad it in itself is entertaining, but you seriously don’t want a discount train wreck. You don’t have to shell out $20K for your entertainer but if someone is offering to play for $200 you should find someone else. You can ask for references if you are on the fence, but usually a good list of client testimonials should help you decide.

5. Sign the Contract.

Always get a contract. I repeat. Always get a contract. Sometimes there is a terrible accident or an unseen natural disaster and you want to make sure you are legally covered in all the situation to get your money refunded and/or discounted in every applicable situation. If your performer doesn’t use contracts, don’t book them. Some performers request a deposit and some don’t, neither is an indicator of more or less professionalism, just preference, so you don’t need to read into that too much. Generally speaking a deposit benefits the performer and is assurance that the booker won’t cancel on them, but if you are planning a large corporate event, there is very little reason for a performer to be nervous about last minute backing out since corporate events are generally orchestrated by professionals themselves.
