Keep in mind that when searching for a band, the first one you find is not always the best.
The first band usually means one of three things:
1. They have lots of money. They have the most money to spend on advertising, which means they have a large budget and also likely cost a lot to hire. They aren’t necessarily the best band, but it’s unlikely a band who’s on the front page of your search is not any good. Front page does not equal best, but as a general rule, horrible bands aren’t usually the first to pop up. Scope them out yourself and watch their videos and listen to their audio clips on their website first.
2. They are crafty at SEO. They are great blog writers and content creators and know how to optimize their site to intercept your search. This means they are clever with their marketing and more likely to be good since it takes tremendous and consistent effort to come up in your search without paying large amounts of money, but it still has no verifiable correlation to whether or not they are any good. Do a thorough scan of their website media and check to see if you like what you hear. If you like it, then get em!
3. They are exactly what you’re looking for. They are actually exactly what you are looking for and the search engine actually did what it was supposed to! YAY! Especially if you typed in something specific like “acoustic live loop pedal performer Los Angeles” or “dancing bar mitzvah band celebration, New York City”.
As a general rule of thumb, when I’m looking for anything on the internet, I generally never buy anything that was the result of an ad. Why? Because if that business has the money to pay to get that product or service in front of you, then they are simply going to add that extra money they spent advertising to you to the fee they will charge you for the product. If they don’t do that, they are loosing money, which isn’t a very smart business tactic. It’s better to find something organically and pay what it’s worth, than pay the higher fee they will take from your pocket to hire them. There are of course exceptions to this, but as a general rule, that’s a good thing to shoot for.
